When The Madhouses Appear

Remember when you would go see a band play a show and you would have no idea what to expect? There was a sort of excitement of anticipation, of the unknown. Of course, it could have been terrible, but you also might stumble upon something truly remarkable and moving. It’s rare to find yourself in this situation now, with myspace, music blogs and the rest you’ve usually listened to a band’s entire discography before you enter the venue. It’s similar to the effect that facebook has had on society: before you ‘officially’ meet someone, you’ve likely checked out their profile, and know more about them than you should when ‘meeting’ them for the first time. The line quality of her illustrations and the characters depicted are reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley, with less witchcraft. Read the interview transcript and be sure to check out her website if you like her work.

Breaking away from this northern trend are Blue Hawaii, a two-piece electo-pop outfit, at times both tropical and dreamy, whose sound is sunny and warm enough to brighten even the Quebec winter.

Tuba Skinny

Tuba Skinny

It was a preemptive strike. Months before Hurricane Katrina devestated New Orleans and the Gulf coast, a band of time travellers arrived, a talented group of musicians intent on reminding the city of its wonderful musical history, raising morale amongst the citizens with song. They have been playing throughout the French Quarter ever since, each virtuoso member converting their heartache into joyful noise for the city to absorb.
