When The Madhouses Appear

Remember when you would go see a band play a show and you would have no idea what to expect? There was a sort of excitement of anticipation, of the unknown. Of course, it could have been terrible, but you also might stumble upon something truly remarkable and moving. It’s rare to find yourself in this situation now, with myspace, music blogs and the rest you’ve usually listened to a band’s entire discography before you enter the venue. It’s similar to the effect that facebook has had on society: before you ‘officially’ meet someone, you’ve likely checked out their profile, and know more about them than you should when ‘meeting’ them for the first time. Whatever happened to the essence?

Blue Hawaii on the road somewhere much warmer than Montreal

When you think of the city of Montreal you would hardly think of words like tropical, sunny or summery, and the only water you could imagine would probably be being skated on. So it’s not surprising that well-established Montreal acts like Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade and the Stills have a hint of darkness or melancholy in their music. Breaking away from this northern trend are Blue Hawaii, a two-piece electo-pop outfit, at times both tropical and dreamy, whose sound is sunny and warm enough to brighten even the Quebec winter.

Aislyn: Ian & Sofia

Aislyn played their first live show on May 18th at Piano’s in Brooklyn, but the project has been years in the making. The duo consists of Ian Hultquist of Passion Pit, and his girlfriend Sofia degli Alessandri and has been in the works since the two met and started dating at Berklee in Boston a few years ago. Now living in Brooklyn, they have released their own EP and last month’s show marked the beginning of something special.

There is something undeniably charming about old-fashioned. Even today, with the information overload and advanced technology all around us, people still enjoy the comfort and feeling of doing something the ‘old-fashioned way’. The music of Fan Sea, which appears to be a one-man bedroom project from Des Moines, Iowa, feels old-fashioned, even if the technology used to make it is anything but.
