Does a summer album have to be fast-paced, sunny and loud? Sure, these may be characteristics of the summer itself, depending on where you live, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that these have to be characteristics of good summer music. Of course, there are plenty of times when all you want in the summer is to be pumped-up and party and to be moving at 100 mph. But, there are certainly other times when you would just as soon slow things to a near standstill as the temperature nears 100 degrees.

Blue Hawaii on the road somewhere much warmer than Montreal
When you think of the city of Montreal you would hardly think of words like tropical, sunny or summery, and the only water you could imagine would probably be being skated on. So it’s not surprising that well-established Montreal acts like Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade and the Stills have a hint of darkness or melancholy in their music. Breaking away from this northern trend are Blue Hawaii, a two-piece electo-pop outfit, at times both tropical and dreamy, whose sound is sunny and warm enough to brighten even the Quebec winter.

Aislyn: Ian & Sofia
Aislyn played their first live show on May 18th at Piano’s in Brooklyn, but the project has been years in the making. The duo consists of Ian Hultquist of Passion Pit, and his girlfriend Sofia degli Alessandri and has been in the works since the two met and started dating at Berklee in Boston a few years ago. Now living in Brooklyn, they have released their own EP and last month’s show marked the beginning of something special.
