Imagine yourself in a grimy rock club, surrounded by tight t-shirts, inexplicable sunglasses and scarves, the flaccid smell of skinny people’s BO wafting by your congested nose. The band has come on stage, looking like what you imagine The Velvet Underground to look like. A quote posted on the Woodsist website promoting Woods’ upcoming album At Echo Lake describes the band’s new album as “perpetually out of time, committed to songsmanship in an age of noise, drone and improvisation.” While Songs of Shame (PF 8.3/MC 79), released just under a year ago, already marked somewhat of a transition away from a more freelance, noise-based approach to a more refined sound, At Echo Lake continues the trend.
