There is something undeniably charming about old-fashioned. Even today, with the information overload and advanced technology all around us, people still enjoy the comfort and feeling of doing something the ‘old-fashioned way’. The music of Fan Sea, which appears to be a one-man bedroom project from Des Moines, Iowa, feels old-fashioned, even if the technology used to make it is anything but.

In a musical era dominated by the likes of Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend and their (wonderful, it must be said) cryptic songs and lyrics, the art of true storytelling in music is often overlooked. Fortunately, there are still a few bands out there that overcome the ‘if you can’t understand it, it must be good’ paradox. Delta Spirit are precisely one of these bands, and their new album History from Below, is a homage to old-time folk storytelling and songwriting.
